WAIKAIA COMMERCIAL HOTEL

The Waikaia Commercial Hotel is a very unpretentious pub, established in 1881. The hotel was built from timber wagoned from Tapanui, and also includes timber from the first school and church at Switzers.

During the gold rush days, there were as many as 23 pubs in the Waikaia area. By the early 1920s this number was down to 3, The Crown, The Empire & The Commercial. Now only the Commercial remains.

An inviting atmosphere envelops you as you enter, and the pub exhibits all the warmth you have come to expect from a small rural community. The bar tables are old wool presses, and farm implements and memorabilia decorate the walls.

The hotel has an excellent restaurant with a cottage atmosphere. It is open Wednesday – Sunday for lunch and evening dining. This is a popular dining spot for locals from all over Northern Southland. The menu offers good honest fare and value for money.

In summer the Garden Bar is a popular spot for locals and visitors to enjoy catching up over a cold beer or glass of wine.
